Hyderabad: The Telangana government has decided to make available liquor at cheaper prices to the poor families in an attempt to curb the illicitly distilled liquor or Gudumba as it is popularly known. The Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, who reviewed the draft excise policy on Friday, is understood to have approved the proposal of supplying liquor through special outlets.

The Chief Minister is said to have told the officials that under the new policy government would supply liquor to the licensed dealers at lower price. He asked the Excise and Prohibition Department officials to fix the alcohol content within permissible limits to protect the health of those consuming the liquor.

KCR instructed the Prohibition officials to root out the mafia engaged in illicit brewing of liquor before opening the liquor outlets in the villages. The enforcement of the Preventive Detention Act against the bootleggers and the involvement of all other departments in curbing illicitly distilled liquor were discussed in detail at the meeting.

Notification for the implementation of the new Excise policy will be issued after August 15 and the new shops will be opened from October 1. The selection of the dealers will be done through the existing lottery system. State Excise Minister T Padma Rao, Chief Secretary Rajiv Sharma , Excise Commissioner R Chandravadan and City Police Commissioner Mahendar Reddy were present in the meeting.
