New Delhi: Members of the BC Welfare Associations from both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh staged a dharna at Jantar Mantar here on Wednesday to press for proper implementation of reservations for the BCs in jobs.

Led by their leader B Krishnaiah, the members demanded that the government set aside Justice Eswaraiah Committee's report on Creamy Layer in jobs that was affecting the chances of BCs in getting jobs. Out of 27 per cent reservations provided to them, only eight per cent were getting jobs because of the condition existing now, they said.

The prevailing criteria for deciding the Creamy Layer were, in fact, detrimental to the interest of BCs, Krishnaiah said. He demanded that the Parliament enact a law to provide 50 per cent of reservations for them in all elected bodies.

Promotions and reservations in private sector, scholarships and other benefits like reservations and creation of a separate Ministry at the Centre to deal with their issues were among the other demands put forth by them. The gathering later tried to march towards the Parliament, but it was thwarted by the police.
