Plans to launch movement against the move from KCR’s home turf

Anti-cheap liquor movement has appealed to people from all sections of the society to join in the movement to express their opposition to the government’s policy

Hyderabad: The Anti Liquor Joint Action Committee (ALJAC), which is up in arms against the government’s policy of introducing cheap liquor in Telangana, has resolved to launch its anti cheap liquor movement from the Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao’s home turf.

Announcing this at a round table conference convened here on Tuesday, the JAC had lashed out at the government for neglecting the adverse effects on public health due to cheap liquor, particularly to the poor and the down-trodden sections of the society.

Taking the government to task, former Congress MP Ponnam Prabhakar Goud, said that the anti cheap liquor movement which was launched on Tuesday has no political overtones and all political parties have come together to lead it as a people’s movement, for a cause.

Questioning the rationality behind the governments’ policy on cheap liquor, he asked “which doctor has certified that cheap liquor is better than Gudumba?” He advised the government to concentrate more on the efficient functioning of Excise department than flooding the market with cheap liquor that ruins the rural and tribal families in the new state of Telangana.

Dr Sravan Dosaju, who had launched a Facebook page and a Twitter account with the names, Telangana Anti Cheap Liquor movement and Anti Cheap Liquor movement, respectively has appealed to people from all sections of the society to join in the movement, to express their opposition to the government’s policy.

Osmania University Professor Visweshwara Rao, who convened the meeting said that the round table meet is the first step in a long drawn battle against the cheap liquor, and the plan of action of the JAC would be announced soon for the people to participate, he added.

Activists and members of various organisations who had earlier participated in the similar anti liquor movements in the State and movement for separate State of Telangana have expressed their disappointment over Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao government’s policies, as they were running contrary to the mission for achieving separate Telangana state.
