World Mosquito Day Today

Warangal: Since Ronald Ross made his landmark discovery that malaria is transmitted among humans by female mosquitoes of the genus Anopheles 118 years ago laying foundation for scientists to better understand, beat and treat this pesky winged invader, the people have tried out nets, coils, liquids, chemical sprays, electronic traps and what not to fend off malaria-carrying mosquitoes.

Although malaria is preventable and treatable, it accounts more than half-a-million lives each year in at least 100 countries despite a dramatic decline in malaria cases and deaths since year 2000. The fact is that despite whole lot of measures taken by the World Health Organisation (WHO), the global health community is still falling short of measures in addressing significant gaps in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of malaria.

Apart from this, there’s a need for promoting and adopting harmless yet highly effective environ-friendly methods to ward off the challenge posed by mosquitoes, instead of using deadly chemicals such as coils, repellers, fogging and spraying. It was proven that smart yard management techniques can help reduce the number of mosquitoes in an area. As some garden plants contain the natural insect repellents citronellal and geraniol, all that you need to do is to have them around your habitation.

Basil (Ocimum basilicum) also known as Tulasi in local jagran is a very effective natural mosquito repellent plant, when grown in and around the houses. With its wonderful aroma, Lemongrass (Cymbopogon) is another herb that people can grow in their garden. The flavor of Marigold (Tagetes Lucida) repels a host of flying insects. Catnip (Nepeta Cataria) is another aromatic perennial herb is a mosquito repellent both by growing plant and applying its oil.

Besides this, there are number of varieties such as Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus), Clove Plant (Syzygium Aromaticum), Lavender (Lavandula Angustifolia), Mint (Mentha) and Rosemary (Rosmarinus Officinalis) that naturally repel the mosquitoes. Speaking to The Hans India, Malaria Warangal Zonal Officer G Jayasri said, “As of now the administration is working on bringing about awareness among the people how to keep their surroundings clean to curb the mosquito menace.”

It may be mentioned here that a couple of days ago, Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, speaking at a meeting in Gangadevipally, advised the villagers to take up natural repellent plantation to avoid the mosquito bite. Referring to a private resort near Hyderabad, the CM advised the villagers to go there and learn about the plantation taken up there to avoid mosquitoes.

However, it remains to see that whether government would take a proactive measure to promote the plantation of repellent varieties of plants. Meanwhile, Warangal district has registered 147 malaria and 36 dengue cases since January, according to district health officials.
