To meet the requirements of drinking water for both the states – Telangana and AP, the Krishna River Management Board Working Group has decided to 4.3 TMC ft of water from Srisailam dam. 5,000 cusecs (cubic feet of water per second) will be released per day from the dead storage of Srisailam for 10 days and the both states will pick up the water at the downstream Nagarjunasagar.

Both the dams - Srisailam and Nagarjunasagar with a combined storage capacity of 527 TMC ft at present have only 161 TMC ft which is below the Minimum Draw Down Level considered dead storage making it the worst-ever situation being faced by the two states this year. Apart from this, not even a single cusec of water has flown to Srisailam so far this year.

Headed by Secretary R.K. Gupta, the three-member KRMB working group including engineers-in-chief M. Venkateswara Rao (AP) and C. Muralidhar (Telangana) met on Monday and decided to utilize the Srisailam dead storage water only for drinking needs.

The orders have been directed by the officials to be followed at any cost as the situation in Krishna basin projects in both the states was startling. Srisailam after further depletion of 4.3 TMC ft in 10 days, would be left with a maximum of 6 TMC ft according to the engineering officials. If there are no inflows in 10 days, the water from Srisailam would be diverted to the NS dam by operating river sluice gates.
