Hyderabad: The Telangana State government is geared up to tackle the Swine flu cases in the State. According to Health Department, around 80 deaths were reported in the first three months of this year. In the wake of these deaths, the Health Department procured one lakh ‘Fluvir’ capsules, Fluvir syrups for the children and 5,000 H1N1 vaccines for the healthcare staff.


The department has been spending around Rs 24 crore to fight swine flu virus. To create awareness among the people, the government would start a campaign through print media, electronic media, radio, pamphlets and posters. Since January, 2,369 swine flu cases were reported and of these 80 ended up dead. Out of 81,200 tested, 29 per cent were positive.


A 24x7 monitoring cell was created and district surveillance teams were also strengthened. Speaking to The Hans India, Dr G Srinivas, Special Officer, Swine flu, said that to treat swine flu patients, isolation wards with 20 to 30 beds were established in the teaching hospitals, 10 beds in each district hospitals and four to five beds in area hospitals.


He also said rapid response teams would be deployed in all the districts which would visit if swine flu cases were reported. Free diagnostics and free drugs will also be provided to the patients admitted even in corporate or private hospitals. Earlier, the private hospitals were charging Rs 5,000 for swine flu detection test.


Dr K Narsimhulu, Nodal officer, swine flu centre, Gandhi hospital, said that people should avoid cold food items and beverages. “Drink plenty of water even if weather is cold as the water will wash out the virus in the blood. If possible, drink fresh fruit juices without ice that will increase the immunity,” he advised. He also said to avoid mass gatherings and wash hands with liquid soap. Use masks, handkerchief or towel while coughing, he added.
