Warangal: One year after its grand announcement, ‘Kaloji Kala Kshetram’, proposed to be built in honour of people’s poet - Padma Vibhushan, the late Kaloji Narayana Rao, remained a non-starter.

Foundation stone for Kaloji Kala Kshetram in Hanamkonda

Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, who attended Kaloji’s birth centenary celebrations held on September 9, 2014 in Warangal, has proposed to build Kala Kshetram in Hanamkonda. On the day, he also laid the foundation stone for the structure to be constructed on a 3.5-acre site with an expenditure of Rs 15 crore, which was later said to be doubled.

The Chief Minister said the Kala Kshetram would be built on the lines of Ravindra Bharathi in Hyderabad within six months. One year passed since the CM’s announcement yet the project has not seen any progress. Much to the agony of the followers of Kaloji Narayana Rao in the district, the foundation stone laid by the CM at Balasamudram in Hanamkonda the home town of Kaloji stands as a mute spectator of the holdup.

It might be noted that initially the structure proposed to serve as a multi-purpose cultural centre was planned to be built at Hayagreeva Chary Grounds at Balasamudram. But later the location was shifted to a municipal land located behind the Warangal Press Club.

It was designed to have the state-of-the-art facilities, including a library, art gallery and a convention centre where about 2,000 people could be accommodated. In the month of June, Minister for Tribal Welfare and Cultural Affairs A Chandulal released the model of Kaloji Kala Kshethram.

It was said that it took seven to eight months to finalise the design part alone. When contacted, district tourism officer M Shivaji informed The Hans India that the tender notice for the execution of works is yet to be issued. He said “very soon” the tenders would be called and the works would begin.

Advisor of Kaloji Foundation Amphasayya Naveen, while expressing concern over delay, urged the state government to expedite the works. The followers of Kaloji here are eagerly waiting to witness the cultural centre to come up.

“The CM on Sept. 9, 2014 promised to conduct Kaloji’s next birth anniversary (Sep 9 in 2015) in the Kala Kshetram. Efforts should be made to see that it would be completed at least by the next anniversary of Kaloji in 2016,” he added.
