- Kavitha’s Telangana Jagruti to adopt 70 families
Hyderabad: Extending a helping hand to the government in tackling the increasing number of suicides in Telangana, Nizamabad MP and daughter of Chief Minister K Kavitha who runs the Telangana Jagruti Trust has decided to adopt 70 families of farmers who had committed suicide due to debt burden and crop failure.
In the process, Kavitha has enlisted the support of leading sportspersons from Telangana. Responding to an appeal by her, tennis ace Sania Mirza, top shuttler Jwala Gutta and cricketer Pragyan Ojha on Sunday declared their support. As Sania is in China to play in a tournament, her mother Naseema Mirza presented a cheque of Rs 3 lakh to Kavitha.
"Agriculture and farmers are core of our country. Whatever crisis the State is facing be it farmers' suicides or an earthquake, we have to come forward to help the people," said Naseema. Sania is the brand ambassador of Telangana State. Jwala, who presented a cheque of Rs1 lakh, said it was the duty of every citizen whether they are celebrities or a common people to come forward to help farmers. "We need to come forward and do whatever we can," she said.
Replying to a question Jwala said though at the moment she may not be in a position to plan what exactly should be done since she was busy with her tournaments, she would be available for meeting the farmers as and when Kavitha or the government wants her services.
Cricketer Pragyan Ojha said since farmers are backbone of the country, he decided to join the effort without second thought. He assured all support to the effort to help the families of farmers. Kavitha said the NRIs wing and others had come forward to help adopt 70 families of the farmers. She said the TRS government was doing everything possible to help farmers but it was the responsibility of every section of the society to contribute.
She said Telangana Jagruti would take care of the surviving members of farmers who committed suicide. Kavitha said that a new committee was formed after the recent round table conference organised by Telangana Jagruthi. This is being headed by Prof Sridhar, while Prof Kodanda Ram would be acting as advisor. She said the committee was open to suggestions from farmers and other groups in its endeavour to solve the crisis.
Responding to questions that the figures of farmers’ suicides quoted by her were very less, she said that her organisation with more than 1 lakh members would be verifying the figures in the coming days to ascertain facts. According to her, people representing various sectors, including corporate, hospitals and film fraternity will be coming forward as part of this noble effort.
The government said 430 farmers committed suicide in the last one year of which 141 have been found eligible for compensation in accordance with the government's criteria. Opposition parties however claimed that over 1,000 farmers killed themselves in the same period.
