Hyderabad: With an honorary pay of Rs 4,000 per month, the GHMC corporators were found to have spent Rs 2,000 per plate of meals, on certain days, said Lok Satta Party based on the information obtained through RTI.

The party leaders also found out that the corporators spent Rs 72 lakh on medical insurance and Rs 1.86 crore on phone bills alone.

Speaking to the media here on Thursday, Lok Satta Party Greater Hyderabad general secretary Devi Prasad and other leaders criticised the indiscriminate spending of the corporators.

They suggested that the corporators should have been served subsidised meal of Rs 5 in order to monitor and improve its quality.

This approach would have saved Rs 35 lakhs to the GHMC exchequer, the leaders said. Devi Prasad further said that the corporators spent Rs 3.66 crore on study tours to Shimla, Gangtok, Darjeeling and Kashmir.

“If it was really a study tour and corporators learnt anything from that, the roads and solid waste management situation of Hyderabad should have been much better,” he said.

The current state of roads and sewage condition in the city makes it clear that they were paid vacations, he lamented.

In the name of paperless offices, the corporators seem to have procured expensive laptops but still claimed close to Rs 1.75 lakh for courier charges, when they can use e-mail services to communicate, the Lok Satta leaders said.

In all, the corporators have spent only Rs 239 crore out of the development funds of Rs 690 crore and the remaining Rs 450 crore funds lapsed. Also, Rs 1 crore was spent on GHMC Mayor's trip to the USA.
