Despite opposition, UoH embraces dress code
The traditional dress code for the 17th convocation of University of Hyderabad (UoH) has been a big hit among the students.
Hyderabad: The traditional dress code for the 17th convocation of University of Hyderabad (UoH) has been a big hit among the students.
Introduced for the first time in the varsity’s history, all most all the students turned up in traditional attire (Kurta-Pyjama, Kurta-Dhoti for men, Sarees and Salwars for women) to receive their degrees.
It may be worth mentioning here that ever since the University decided to have a traditional dress code for the convocation as per the University Grants Commission (UGC) directive, a section of students was up in the arms stating the university was saffornising the campus.
With the protest of students, the varsity retracted their decision and made traditional dress code as indicative and suggestive.Meanwhile, the convocation was held at Shilpakala Vedika on Thursday.
Besides dress code, several graduating students from the north eastern States and West Bengal were spotted in the traditional attire of their respective States.
One such graduating student of MA English, Evangellene, CN, wore a Jainsem, a traditional dress of Khasi Community in Meghalaya.“We all just decided to ignore the mail sent by the administration and chose to wear clothes of our choice,” Evangellene, CN said.
Another graduating student of MSc Chemistry Deepjyothi Dar from Assam was seen in traditional attire of his State (Kurta, Dhoti and Gamcha). “It feels good to receive degree in the traditional dress,” he said.
“We didn't mind to go traditional. Even if there was no circular by the administration, we preferred to wear sarees,” said Payal Jha, a graduating student of Department of Bio-Chemistry.
Some of the students who could not wear according to dress code were spotted with the shawls made of khadi.
