Hyderabad: The Nizam College’s dream of becoming a University has been shattered. According to Prof E Suresh Kumar, Registrar of Osmania University, the plan was not there now as it was under RUSA. Now under RUSA, OU was getting only Rs 20 crore for development activities, he said.

The Nizam College was one among the 45 autonomous colleges across the country that was selected for conversion into the university by the UPA government.

The Ministry of Human Resource Development and University Grants Commission (UGC) had decided to amend the UGC Act 1956 and give authority for the autonomous colleges to award degrees.

The government earmarked up to Rs 55 crore funds under Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) scheme for the conversion of colleges into varsities. The decision to this effect was taken by the Centre in 2013.
