Farmers of Pegadapally and Bhoolakshmi Camp setting fire to their paddy crop on SundayBodhan: Drought and depleting ground water levels in Bodhan of Nizamabad district have pushed farmers into distress and forced them to burn the paddy crop that had gone dry. Farmers of Bodhan mandal depend on bore wells to raise their crops.

Though power is available to run the bore wells, there is no ground water. This has resulted in about 1000 acres not being adequately irrigated and the crop going dry. The farmers here have been demanding that the government should declare all such mandals as drought affected.

With no help coming from the government, paddy farmers of Bodhan mandal in protest set their crop on fire. Pegadapally, Bhoolakshmi Camp, Amdapoor, Erazpally and other villages of the mandal are among the worst affected due to severe ground water scarcity.

Talking to The Hans India farmers said that they had incurred an expenditure of nearly Rs 25 to 30,0000 per acre. They had sown paddy in 3 to 15 acres by taking land on lease. Crop in nearly 1000 acres has dried up in Bodhan mandal, they claim.

Ramana, a farmer, said he had sown five acres paddy and invested nearly Rs 1.5 lakh, but the depleting ground water levels damage the crops. He said farmers of Bodhan mandal had suffered a loss of nearly 2.5 crore. Srinivas of Pegadapally said the drought conditions had hit the paddy crop and farmers in nearly 5 to 8 villages suffered heavy loss.

Another farmer Raju said they suffered huge loss by sowing paddy this year and burning their crop, to pressurise the State government to immediately announce drought relief measures. He demanded the government to compensate farmers by minimum Rs 15,000 per acre of paddy crop.

Sudershan, Tahasildaar of Bodhan admitted that the mandal was badly affected due to the drastic fall in ground water levels. He said in Pegadapally, Bhoolakshmi Camp, Amdapoor, Erjapally and other villages the paddy farmers had lost their crops.

He informed that the revenue officials conducted the survey and have sent a report to the agricultural department. Narsimha, Joint Director of Agriculture said that they had sent proposals to the State government and now it was for the government to take a decision on declaring this mandal as drought affected.
