OGH doctors Rare feat
Hyderabad: A team of Osmania General Hospital (OGH) doctors have performed world’s second and India’s first rare auto-transplantation liver surgery after correcting blocked important blood vessels of the liver.
Speaking to The Hans India, Dr Ch Madhusudan, Head of the Gastroenterology Department, said that till now nobody attempted this type of surgery in India since it was a risky one. “We pumped blood from the lower part of the body to upper part bypassing the blood to neck part. By using HTK solution that generally used for preserving organs retrieved from the brain-dead to freeze the liver,” he said. Auto-liver transplantation surgery avoids usage of lifelong immunosuppression drugs which are required in regular liver transplantation.
The surgery was performed on Nagaraju, a 24-year-old man from Khammam district free of cost earlier this month. He has been suffering from rarest and serious liver disease since childhood. Nagaraju is a security guard in a private company and his parents are agriculture labourers.
He was diagnosed as ‘Chronic ‘Budd-Chiari Syndrome’ due to non-development of important and major blood vessels of Liver (IVC and hepatic veins). He was suffering with dilatation and engorgement of all blood vessels below the chest due to blockage of major blood returning vein to the heart (IVC).
He was also having recurrent episodes of bleeding from these blood vessels. He consulted all major corporate hospitals for the treatment. They advised him to undergo liver transplantation as a treatment of choice that costs around Rs 20 to 30 lakh. He then approached the OGH.
The doctor said, “We have waited for cadaveric liver organ for two months. Further, also tried for interventional radiological procedures for him but we couldn’t succeed.’
Explaining the procedure, Dr Madhusudhan said: “We removed his liver from his body after securing bunches of blood vessels and cooled liver with cold preservative solutions for four hours to prevent liver damage due to lack of blood supply. Finally, doctors transplanted his own liver back into his body. It took about 10 hours to complete the surgery.”
