Medak: A farmer on Saturday climbed a cell tower in protest against acquisition of his farmland for laying the Medak-Akkannapeta railway line.

Venkatrami Reddy, a resident of Semnapur village, near Pathur, owns two acres of farmland. Medak-Akkannapeta railway line is being laid right through the middle of his land. Venkatrami Reddy has been protesting against “meagre compensation” being offered to him by the government.

He said his farmland has a rich source of water, while the lands in the vicinity have failed to yield water even after digging borwells to a depth of 500 feet. As such, if his farmland is taken away, his very survival is threatened, he said. Demanding that he be provided with a job in the railway in lieu of his land, if acquired, he climbed up the cell and threatened to take a plunge.

Tahsildar Naveen and sub-inspector Vinayak Reddy reached the spot and persuaded him to climb down. They assured him that they would speak to the railway authorities and ensure justice for him.
