Hyderabad: After prolonged deliberations, the BJP-TDP combine has decided to field Dr Pagidipati Devaiah, a Florida-based medical professional, as its candidate for the byelection to the Warangal Lok Sabha constituency.

Devaiah, a native of Jangaon and a postgraduate in medicine, settled in the USA. He returned to India during the 2009 General Election and tried to contest from Warangal.

As no political party had come forward then to accommodate him, Devaiah kept himself away from the elections. BJP sources said Devaiah would file his nomination papers on November 4. Speaking to media after announcing the name of the candidate, BJP floor leader in the Assembly K Lakshman said main contest would be between the ruling TRS and the BJP.

The recent initiatives by the Centre like, including Warangal in the list of smart cities, selecting it for National Heritage City Development and Augmentation Yojana (HRIDAY) and Atal Mission for Rejuvenation of Urban Towns (AMRUT) Scheme would favour the BJP, he said. Out of seven Assembly constituencies in the Warangal Parliament segment, the BJP is strong in Warangal East, Warangal West, Wardhannapet, Bhupalpally, and Palakurthi.
