Hyderabad: Strongly expressing his disapproval of the response by the State Election Commission (SEC) with regard to the deletion of voters in GHMC limits, former Minister Marri Shashidhar Reddy demanded removal of the State Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Bhanwar Lal for the ‘cover-up.’

In a letter addressed to the CEO, Shashidhar Reddy explained how people had lost faith in the institution of Election Commission because of the manner in which previous District Election Officer, Somesh Kumar and the CEO had acted under the directions of Telangana Chief Minister, K Chandrashekar Rao.

He questioned the CEO as to how his office had failed to clarify as many as 19 lakh notices allegedly served on voters. He urged the CEO to state clearly the number of voters deleted from the roll between January 17 and September 16 because the Election Commission’s official website changed the text during this period.

Meanwhile, welcoming the decision of the Election Commission (EC) for thorough re-verification of names of wrongly deleted voters, Shashidhar Reddy said he had objection with the way the Election Commission’s press note had been worded as there was no mention of the EC anywhere in it.

He said the CEO also had to clarify categorically that the number of voters deleted between 17.01.2015 and 16.09.2015 still remains at 6.3 lakh only.

The reason for this is that the Election Commission website now simply says “deleted electors list after final publication (17-01-2015)”, whereas earlier the website as well as the CD given to political parties clearly showed it as “deleted voters list between 17.01.2015 and 16.09.2015”. In case the number of names deleted was more than 6.3 lakh, CEO would have to do a lot of explanation, he said.
