Hyderabad: The Telangana State Medical Services and Infrastructure Development Corporation (TMSIDC) is planning to procure antibiotics through open tender as the public sector companies are increasing drug prices by 20 to 80 per cent.

According to an official, TSMSIDC is procuring 18 life saving drugs from six Central Public Sector Undertakings (CPSU) and three Public Sector Units. It has been procuring directly without going through the tender process as the antibiotics are reserved for the CPSU, the PSU firms.

The CPSUs and PSUs sent representations to the TSMSIDC in May, stating that Directorate General of Supplies and Disposals (DGSD) released new rate contract and they can supply antibiotics as per new rates only. The drug price of two antibiotics decreased, but the prices of 16 antibiotics went up between 20 and 80 per cent.

Tamil Nadu Medical Services Corporation (TNMSC) and Rajasathan Medical Services Corporation (RMSC) have been following open tender process. The Telangana State government has earmarked Rs 110 crore for 2014-15 and Rs 114 crore for 2015-16 to procure drugs. Of these around Rs 25 to Rs 30 crore has been spent for antibiotics only.

Speaking to The Hans India, TSMSIDC Chairman R Venugopal Rao said they had represented to the government to permit the Corporation to procure antibiotics through open tender as the CPSU and PSUs increased the prices of these drugs abnormally.
