After much delay, the State-run universities have been asked to name nominee for the search committee to appoint the vice-chancellor.

To this effect, the Telangana State Council of Higher Education has shot letters to all the universities to send a nominee. For the appointment of the vice-chancellors, a search committee would be constituted comprising a nominee from the concerned university, government nominee and University Grants Commission (UGC) nominee.
It may be mentioned here that the government has already received UGC nominee a long back and Principal Secretary of government higher education is a nominee by de-facto.
The search committees would be formed for all the universities and applications from the eligible candidates would be called for. According to the sources, scrutiny of the eligible candidates by search committees would be done by November end and vice-chancellors would be appointed by December end.
Further, the government is also mulling to appoint chancellors to the universities. Till recently, Governor of the State was chancellor of the State-run universities. However, the Telangana government adopted and amended Andhra Pradesh Universities Act, 1991, Jawaharlal Nehru Technological Universities Act, 2008, the Jawaharlal Nehru Architecture and Fine Arts University Act, 2008, Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University Act, 1985, Dr BR Ambedkar Open University Act, 1982 and Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technologies Act, 2008 and decided to appoint chancellors to the varsities.
According to the sources, the government would take up recruitment in the all universities after appointment of the vice-chancellors. Presently, a total of 1,448 assistant professor posts are vacant in the universities and of the total, 1,261 posts were filled up with contract lecturers.
