Chukka RamaiahHyderabad: Welcoming the introduction of aptitude test for admissions into prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and National Institutes of Technology (NITs), renowned educationist Chukka Ramaiah felt that it would help in testing the scientific and creative thinking of candidates.

He believed that perhaps the aptitude test would be on the lines of Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). In a significant development, the Committee of Expert Persons constituted by the IIT council has recommended the government to set up a National Testing Service which would conduct the aptitude examination.

It further suggested the government to do away with the JEE Main and only conduct JEE which will be on the lines of JEE-Advanced. At the time of applying for examination, the students should be asked to attach their classroom performance for reference instead of taking Board marks to consideration for JEE, Ramaiah suggested.

A critic of multiple choice question and objective type in JEE exams, Ramaiah once again reiterated his position to remove MCQs from the question paper. “MCQs will not work for the competitive exams like JEE advanced. Bring back the descriptive type of questions in the examination which will test the students’ ability in solving a particular problem.

The marks should be allotted on the basis in which a question is solved and in which method not for MCQs,” he observed. Ramaiah said as large numbers of students are appearing for examination and due to administrative challenges multiple choice questions were introduced.

“The standards of education system should not be compromised saying administrative problems. The government has to come up with an alternative solution and introduce easy questions in the exams” Ramaiah added. On the weightage given to the Board Marks for JEE, Ramaiah said taking weightage was not correct.

“The States are giving away easy questions paper, so as to increase the marks and also wants more representations in the IITs from their state. Though the percentile system was introduced it could not give correct assessment of the students,” he added. On the coaching centres, he Ramaiah there should not be coaching centres. “When there is disparity between classroom teaching and expectations, coaching centres have come into an existence,” he added.
