Hyderabad: The Telangana unit of Loksatta Party on Friday alleged that festivals like Vinayaka Chaturthi, Bonalu, Bathukamma and Ramzan was not just a season for celebrations but a huge opportunity for minting and pocketing money for both Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) officials and contractors.

Speaking to newsmen, leaders Solkar Reddy, Sambi Reddy and Jagan Metla alleged that the GHMC had spent about Rs 20 crore for celebrating these festivals. They alleged that the civic body had spend Rs 4.22 crore for Bathukamma, Rs 5.9 crore for Bonalu and Ramzan and Rs 24 lakh for Vinayaka Chaturthi.

“Besides this, the State government had spent about Rs 7.1 crore for a comprehensive survey and Rs 1.09 crore for data entry,” they added.

The leaders claimed that an amount to the tune of Rs 3 to 4 crore was spent on festival lighting and another Rs 4 crore was exhausted for petty works in and around the temples.

“What was the need for centralised intervention by the GHMC when most of the temples have their own committee to organise and fund their celebrations?” they questioned.

The leaders further stated the Comprehensive survey conducted by the government at an expense of over 7 crore was illogical and was a waste of public money.
