Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy Celebrating religious festival is against the spirit of constitution: Suravaram

Hyderabad: Communist Party of India (CPI) national general secretary Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy slammed the Telangana government for declaring to celebrate Christmas officially. He made this comments while participating in a seminar organised by CPI, Telangana unit on the occasion of party’s 90th anniversary on Saturday.

Addressing the media on the sidelines of the event, Suravaram pointed out that how can any government in a secular state celebrate religious festivals officially. Suravaram opined that this act by various state governments is against the spirit of constitution. He said that the regional leaders are responsible for the damage of secularism, which had been leading to religious intolerance in the country.

Taking a dig at BJP-led NDA government, Suravaram said that the saffron party with a religious agenda has been trying to treat minorities as second class citizens. Condemning the attacks on Dalits and minorities, he hailed the writers and poets, who had returned their awards protesting against the religious intolerance.

The CPI leader criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not condemning the controversial comments made by his cabinet ministers. How can the union government dictate terms about the food habits in a country with various diverged cultures and religions? Suravaram questioned.

Later in a informal chat with newsmen on the occasion, Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) founder-director P M Bhargava said that "the Centre by jettisoning scientific temper abandoned the path of democracy and took to the path of Hindu autocracy". He felt the recent acts by the union government were against the scientific temper.

The seminar organisers felicitated PM Bhargava felicitated for returning Padma Bhushan award as protest for religious intolerance. CPI state secretary Chada Venkat Reddy, former High Court Justice Chandrakumar , Palle Venkat Reddy and many others participated in the seminar.
