Hyderabad: The private engineering college managements have demanded the State government to hike the tuition fee for all the courses from the existing Rs 35,000 to Rs 50,000-Rs 60,000.

According to the college managements, the Rs 35,000 fee was fixed by the Admission and Fee Regulatory Committee (AFRC) in 2012, in the undivided Andhra Pradesh.

With fee hike due for the year and in wake of formation of new State, the college managements want the government to fix the minimum fee between Rs 50,000 and Rs 60,000 per annum. Infrastructure, laboratories and faculty members are taken as a criterion for fixing fee.

The college managements say the existing fee isn’t viable for them to survive without a hike in the fee structure. They argue that the existing fee structure would not even suffice for paying the salaries of the staff and for maintenance.

Telangana Private Engineering and Professional Colleges Managements president N Goutham Rao said, “The notification is yet to be released by the AFRC. The colleges will pitch in for the hike before the Committee, and based on the facilities it will take a call,” he added.

Post bifurcation of erstwhile AP, the Telangana government has constituted its own AFRC headed by Justice P Swaroop Reddy, Retired Judge High Court, to fix the college fee for the professional courses. According to the sources, the committee is likely to meet for the first time on November 19 or 20, and issue a notification with regard to fixing of fee.

A month time would be given to the institution for submitting the required material to the committee for fee hike. As there is already delay in issuing the notification, the committee is not likely to extend time fixed for the institutions for submission of data for fixation of fee. With the colleges pitching in for the hike, parents are concerned that the Committee might say yes to the fee hike. “A few colleges charge a minimum fee and other colleges a bomb.
