Sangareddy: The indefinite fast being observed by the ASHA workers of Medak district to increase their pay reached its second day on Thursday.

It has been 79 days since the ASHA workers have been protesting across the State for setting up and implementation of minimum wages, provision of accidental insurance, job security, pension, gratuity and pregnancy leave. However, the State government was tight-lipped about agreeing to their demands until now.

The workers, who perform several duties like taking care of the entire maternity process, get paid anywhere between Rs 100 to Rs 1000 currently, which is very less for meeting the survival needs. “Even if the government pays Rs 3,000 to an ASHA worker per month, it won’t cost the treasury more than Rs 9 crore. Instead of wasting money on unnecessary things, the government should take steps to address our issues, said Narsamma, district president of ASHA workers union.
