Mahabubnagar: With Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) throwing up its hands over ensuring minimum support price (MSP) for cotton, the farmers in Mahabubnagar are left to the mercy of traders.

The traders and brokers combine are taking the poor gullible farmers for a ride by adopting all kinds of fraudulent tactics. For instance, the farmers at Kesampeta Mandal near Shadnagar recently were shocked to find that the traders were using weighing machines which were remotely controlled. It was allegedly found that such weighing machines were so manipulated to show the weight of cotton at least 2.5 Kgs less than the actual quantity.

A farmers said, “I had brought three quintals of cotton, but after being weighed here it was shown that the quantity had come up 30 kgs short. The fraud being perpetrated by the trader was exposed only after I represented the matter to the authorities.”

The farmers, who are already reeling under misery due to failure of rains, feel that they have been thrown to the wolves. The deficit rainfall led to drastic fall in the yields. Their hopes of securing at least MSP for their produce were dashed. The traders with the help of brokers are exploiting the farmers.

“Even if CCI is reluctant to purchase cotton, the State government is ready to purchase the cotton at MSP. The farmers should not fall prey to the trap of brokers. The weighing machines and other equipment in the government markets are in good conditions and farmers can cross-check and if they fiund any discrepancy, they should immediately report it to the authorities,” said Balamani , the Assistant Director of Marketing.

The CCI set up just five purchasing centre in the district and so far purchased just 5,539 quintals. While the total production of cotton stood at 1, 37,000 quintal.
