Karimnagar: As the people are staying away from postal services and relying more on internet and mobile phones to send messages to their relatives and friends, the postal department has diverted its focus to commercial mails and began efforts to develop confidence among people, especially commercial operators.

As part of its strategy, the postal department has introduced new service ‘Nanyatha’ to make the mailing system more transparent. For the purpose, software has also been developed to know the whereabouts of letters dropped in letter boxes by the customers.

With this software, customers by a click of mouse can know whether the letters dropped by them in letter boxes are collected or not. It is also possible to know the date, time and name of the postman who picked up the letters. Postmaster General for Telangana State Colonel M Eleesha on Saturday launched the new service at Head Post Office in the town.

Barcode stickers have been pasted inside of all 39 letter boxes existed in the town and the locations of boxes were indicated with GPRS system. The details of a particular letter box would automatically be updated in the department’s Nanyatha website when postman scans the barcode with his mobile phone and enters the number of letters collected from the box.

Then the customers from anywhere in the country could know the details by visiting www.appost.in. Karimnagar town has been divided into two beats. The Postal department is also contemplating to introduce the system across the country.

Speaking to The Hans India, Colonel Elwesha said in the wake of widespread usage of internet and mobilise phones to send messages, the percentage of personal mails have come down drastically. However, commercial mails replaced personal mails, he informed.

Excluding twin cities, Hyderabad region is getting a revenue of about Rs 39 crore through business services per annum, he informed and hoped that the new service would help the department to develop confidence among the commercial operators. Thought there were internal cross check, it would help the department to make postman responsible if any letter was misplaced.
