Karimnagar: In the wake of the public rushing for double bedroom houses (2BHK), the district administration engaged college students to receive the applications from the beneficiaries.

As the State government has decided to select beneficiaries for the 2BHK scheme and released notification, people across the district are rushing to the District Collectorate to submit applications to the Collector during Prajavani programme held every Monday.

Unable to cope up with the swelling beneficiaries, the district administration has deployed college students to receive applications and issue an acknowledgment slips. Separate counters were setup for the students at the entrance of the Collectorate building to accept the applications from the people. Polytechnic and intermediate students were engaged for the job.

Speaking to The Hans India, Charan, student of Science Wing College, said they have been engaged in the job since last six weeks. When a beneficiary approaches them with the application, they would give a number to each applicant and issue an acknowledgment, he informed.

Applications received during Prajavani programme and Tahsildar offices across the district would be updated in the housing department website, said Mahesh, an intermediate first year student. A total of 65 students including 35 first year and 30 senior inter students of Science Wing College were engaged in the work.

On the other hand, hundreds of people from different parts of the district thronged the Collectorate to submit applications even though the government has already decided to sanction only 400 houses to each Assembly constituency in the first phase. The district would get only 5,200 houses as there were 13 segments. But, so far, the district administration received more than 50,000 applications, a district level officer said.

Though people were asked to submit applications at the local Tahsildar offices, they were approaching the Collector, not daring to leave no stone unturned, he added. Latha, a resident of Sulthanpur of Yeligedu mandal, said she along with her children was staying in a thatched hut as they do not have own house. She was denied house during the previous Congress government. Similar was the case of Raju, a resident of Ganeshnagar in Karimnagar town.

In the wake of huge response from the public, the government tightened the process of selecting beneficiaries for housing scheme. According to new guidelines, a district level committee would finalise the beneficiaries list. The district Minister would act as Chairman, the Collector as Secretary and MLAs would be members in the committee.
