Mahabubnagar: District Collector, TK Sridevi, along with Superintendent of Police (SP), Vishwaprasad declared Mahabu bnagar free from arrack (gudumba) and commended the immense work done by the Excise department in eradicating the illegal liquor flow in about 1,512 villages across the district.

Taking part in a programme organised by Excise department and Red Cross Society, Sridevi appreciated the officials of excise department for curbing the menace of gudumba.

“The initiatives taken up by the Excise department during the past three months have yielded positive results and out of about 1,515 revenue villages, 1,512 villages have become gudumba free. And am proud to declare that that Mahabubnagar is arrack free district in the State,” said the collector.

Commending the work of Excise department, the SP along with district collector, asked the officials to carry forward the same sprit to eradicate the menace of adulterated toddy in the district. “We have a comprehensive plan. We are not just eradicating the menace of country liquor but also charting out various initiatives to rehabilitate the people who are depending on gudumba sales in the villages,” added the collector.

While releasing the statistics, the collector said that so far, the excise police have booked 3,858 cases and arrested 1,441 people in connection with illicit liquor cases. An amount of Rs 17. 70 lakh has been recovered as penalty from 68 violators.

Expressing her concern, the collector said that not just the youth, but women in villages were becoming addicted to gudumba which has spoiled the lives of thousands of families in the district. “Illiteracy added with superstition and social evils are driving villagers to get addicted to arrack.

It is high time that more awareness is spread amongst the rural folk about bad effects of liquor. The government is committed to implement all the welfare schemes to those villagers who will stay away from gudumba,” said the collector.

Speaking on the occasion, SP Vishwaprasad said, “All the checkposts on the state boarders will be strengthened to check illegal transport of black jaggery used for manufacturing gudumba.” As part of programme, Red Cross Society conducted a blood donation camp where 100 police personnel donated blood.
