Hyderabad: The police on Monday foiled a run proposed by activists, who planned to hold a controversial ‘beef festival’ on Osmania University campus here on December 10. The police, who already said that no festival would be permitted on the campus in the wake of the university denying permission, shifted the participants of the proposed run, in a van.

The run was planned as a precursor to the ‘beef festival’. Mild tension prevailed when the police obstructed the 5K run organised by the AISF activists on the campus, urging students to make the proposed ‘beef festival’ at Arts College a success.

The run started from the Arts College and was proceeding towards NCC Gate. But the police obstructed the run after it started. The police and students jostled each other, leading to mild tension. Later, the police arrested several students and shifted them to the police station.

Speaking on the occasion, the student leaders pledged that they would conduct the festival at any cost facing any sort of hurdles. The students raised slogans against the communal forces. The police arranged pickets and deployed huge force on the campus.

On the other hand, ABVP activists gave a call for ‘Chalo OU’ on December 9 against the beef festival. Before being taken away by the police, the student protesters hit out at the NDA government at the Centre and the TRS government in Telangana and asserted that they would go ahead with the ‘beef festival’.

The ‘beef festival’ has been planned on December 10, coinciding with the International Human Rights Day, against alleged attempts to curb the dietary habits of certain groups. Meanwhile, another group of students had said they would conduct a ‘pork festival’ on the same day, saying that pork was more nutritious and that its consumption provided livelihood to certain communities.

IT may be recalled that BJP MLA from Goshamahal in Hyderabad Raja Singh had vowed to stop the ‘beef festival’, saying cow was a sacred animal for crores of people in the country. He had said an event to worship the cow should also be allowed if a ‘beef festival’ was permitted. Amid the standoff, the university, one of the country’s oldest institutions of higher learning, made it clear that no festival would be permitted on the campus. “To maintain peace and tranquillity on the university campus, no festivity is allowed,” Hyderabad East Zone DCP E Ravinder said on Monday.
