Hyderabad: Former Minister and TDP senior leader K Vijayarama Rao is all set to join the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS). He resigned from the TDP on Friday.

Panchayat Raj Minister K Taraka Rama Rao called on Vijayarama Rao on Saturday at his house and formally invited him to join the party.

Speaking to media persons later, KTR said the new State of Telangana required the services of experienced personalities like Vijayarama Rao. The former CBI chief could help the State government tackle crucial issues. Vijayarama Rao said he would take a final call on joining TRS after meeting Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao in the next two days.

According to sources, the TRS has promised Vijayarama Rao's daughter Annapurna a respectable position in the party.

When asked about criticism by opposition parties that TRS was encouraging defections, KTR said all those who were criticising TRS had themselves switched loyalties many times. He said the leader of opposition K Jana Reddy should answer why he had left Telugu Desam and joined Congress.

Even TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu was a Minister in the Congress before jumping into the Telugu Desam, he recalled. In a democracy, political leaders had a right to change the parties and there was nothing wrong if one joined the ruling party as they were impressed by the government’s programmes, he said. KTR wondered how the actions by the MPTCs and ZPTCs joining the TRS could be described as wrong when big leaders like Jana Reddy and Chandrababu Naidu switched sides. It was up to the leaders to choose with which party they wanted to sail.

Responding to a query on the alleged threatening call to Congress leader Shabbir Ali, KTR said it was not the TRS culture. “Our leaders and activists will not resort to such things as the TRS will remain in power for another three-and-a-half years.” An inquiry was going on into the issue and action would be taken against such callers, he added.
