Hyderabad: The state’s policy against Left-wing extremism (LWE) would not change, said Telangana DGP Anurag Sharma. LWE activities were under effective check and extremist crime declined this year, he added.

The DGP denied mass recruitment of Maoist cadres in the State and called the joining of youngsters as sporadic. “There is no mass scale recruitment by them. Those who have joined were influenced by their close associates and relatives,” the DGP said while answering a query on mass recruitment. The State has tough stance against LWE, he said.

In joint operations by the Telangana and Chhattisgarh police, 11 top cadres from different agencies were arrested. A total of 156 Maoists surrendered before the police, the DGP said during the annual press conference at his office on Wednesday.

He said that as many as six incidents of exchange of fire between the police and Maoists took place in 2015 in which five Maoists were gunned down. In September this year, two cadres Sruthi and Vidyasagar Reddy were gunned down by the police at Warangal and in another incident in June, K Vivek (19), a college dropout, and two others were killed in an encounter at Khammam.

The DGP said that as many as 156 underground cadres from Telangana were identified and most of them were operating from Chhattisgarh, while 166 extremists were arrested and 12 from top cadres surrendered to the police.

An increase in the gender-based crime was seen in the State this year, but the police call it as a good sign that the women were coming forward to complain about harassment and outrage of modesty.

In 2015, as many as 12,422 cases of crime against women were reported including 3,199 cases of outraging modesty and 6,267 cases of harassment. Out of 1,020 rape cases, 227 cases were elopement and love related issues, said DGP.

“We registered some cases of harassment under Nirbhaya Act. Women are coming out to complain about the issues and we see it as a good sign. The SHE teams of Telangana worked better and arrested 825 persons,” he said.

In Telangana, as many as 92,685 cognisable crimes were reported till November this year against 93,439 cases during 2014, with a decline of 0.81 per cent, where as property lost in 2015 is over Rs 88.15 crore and 54.96 per cent of it has been recovered, the DGP added.
