Nizamabad: Backward Classes Welfare Associations on Sunday demanded the Union government to celebrate India’s first lady teacher Savithribai Phule’s, birthday on January 3 as ‘Women’s Teachers Day’.

Participating in the 185th birth anniversary celebrations of Savitribai Phule organised jointly by the Backward Classes Teachers Union and Backward Classes Welfare Association at Ambedkar Bhavan in the town on Sunday, BC Welfare Associations State President Jajula Srinivas Goud said that ‘Savitribai Phule’ is the first women teacher in the country who did a commendable service in the spread of women’s education in the country. She created awareness among the poor and the downtrodden women, he added.

Srinivas Goud demanded the State government to immediately remove the ‘Creamy layer’ criteria which would hurt the interests of the Backward Classes. He said in India, eight types of reservations were being implemented but the State and Central governments were implementing the creamy layer criterion only under the category of Backward Classes and demanded its removal immediately.

Goud said that reservations were being implemented for the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in promotions, but there is no such opportunity for the BCs, he lamented. The government should immediately implement the reservations in promotions among the Backward Classes, he added. More than 30 women government teachers were felicitated on the occasion.
The BC Teachers Union District President Madavedi Vinod Kumar, BC Association District President Narala Sudhakar, BC Employees Association President Lakshmi Narayana, Association Members Anjaneyulu and others were present on the occasion.
