Hyderabad: Amid strong buzz that the notification for GHMC elections will be issued in a day or two, the Telangana government on Monday amended the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation Act-1955 by cutting down the time limit for the conduct of elections and poll process from nearly 45 days (as practised earlier) to 14 days only.

As per the amendment, the last date for filing of nominations will be only three days (as against 7 days earlier) from the date of publication of the election notification. The three days includes public holidays.

The election will be held on the 14th day of the issuance of the notification. The date for the scrutiny of nominations will be the day immediately following the last date for filing of nominations even if that day happens to be a public holiday. The order, issued by the Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MA&UD), said the time for the withdrawal of nominations will be only one day after the scrutiny.

Only nine days will be left for the date of poll after the withdrawal of the nominations. Only seven days will be left for the political parties to take up poll campaign on behalf of their candidates.Special Chief Secretary to the government ( MA&UD) MG Gopal said that in exercise of the powers conferred by section 101 of the Andhra Pradesh Re-organization Act, 2014 (Central Act No.6 of 2014), the Government of Telangana made the amendment to the GHMC act. This move of the government has come in for criticism from the Congress and TTDP.

Talking to The Hans India, TPCC president N Uttam Kumar Reddy said TRS is trying to win the elections by unfair means. “The senior officials in the concerned departments are acting like stooges to the ruling TRS, by making the field uneven for other contesting parties. KCR is resorting to propaganda by engaging most of the hoardings in the city.

While on the other hand, the management of advertising agencies are threatened not to provide space to other political parties, he said. The Telangana TDP said the government had taken a ‘unilateral’ decision to reduce the time limit for the conduct of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation election to 14 days by amending the 60 year old GHMC act -1955.

TTDP president L Ramana said the government should have called an all party meeting before taking such important decision. Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao is issuing orders for his convenience by derailing the official process, he said.
