Hyderabad: Taking serious exception to the amendment of Municipalities Act, Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president N Uttam Kumar Reddy alleged that the Act was unilateral and the TRS government took this decision due to fear of defeat in the ensuing GHMC elections.

Speaking to media persons at Gandhi Bhavan, the TPCC chief alleged that the TRS government had issued a GO amending the GHMC law overnight that the election process would be completed within 15 days. He questioned the State government what prompted them to complete the GHMC election process within 15 days.

He also said the State government had to discuss the issue if it wanted to amend the law and it was not proper to amend the law as it wished. “It shows that the TRS government was afraid of GHMC elections,” said Uttam Kumar Reddy.

On the issue of reservation of wards, TPCC chief alleged that the TRS was attempting to ensure that wards provide maximum scope for its win in the GHMC elections. He felt that the TRS candidates were informed well in advance about the reservation of wards, before any other political party knew it officially.

“At first, the ruling party favoured division of GHMC into three corporations. Later, the government announced creating 200 wards in the present corporation. However, at last they decided to continue with 150 wards, as alterations did not favour TRS,” he alleged.
