Gajwel: With a view to produce quality research which would be helpful for the farmers cultivating vegetables and fruits, the State government is coming up with a horticultural university at Mulugu in Medak district. Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao will lay the foundation stone for the university on Wednesday, along with Union Minister for Agriculture Radha Mohan Singh.

A huge public gathering involving 10,000 farmers has been planned for the event. For this, 500 acres have been identified close to the Forest Research Centre in Mulugu. Out of 500 acres, 112 acres have been acquired already. With an estimate of Rs 1,832 crore, the university would be constructed. Already, Rs 47 crore has been sanctioned by the government for this purpose. The campus is expected to be constructed within five years.

In the first phase, a PG college, two degree colleges, two polytechnic colleges, hostels for girls and boys, Centre for Excellence research centre and a Krishi Vignan Kendra would be setup. This university will be the fourth of its kind in India. The other three horticultural universities have been established in Himachal Pradesh (Solan), Karnataka (Bagalkot) and Andhra Pradesh (Tadepalligudem).

Medak has recently been making great advances in the field of horticulture, with almost 50,000 hectares being cultivated with vegetables and fruits. Five years ago, this was only limited to 10,000 hectares.Mainly Gajwel, Mulugu, Wargal, Jinnaram, Patancheru, Kondapur, Sadasivpet, Siddipet, Chinnakodur, Zaheerabad, Narayankhed and Raigode are known for this cultivation.

Tomatoes, egg plant, okra, cabbage, cauliflower, onions, beans, potatoes, bitter gourd, bottle gourd and so on, are being cultivated in these mandals. The produce is sent to markets in Hyderabad, Chennai, Bengaluru and Delhi, with a monthly turnover running into hundreds of crores.
However, due to scanty scientific knowledge, the farmers have not been able to get high yields.

Having observed this, the Chief Minister had decided last year that a horticultural university would be setup in his home constituency. With such a research-focussed institution coming up in the area, people are under the impression that farmers growing horticultural plants would yield more in the future, and Medak would make strides towards becoming self-sufficient in horticulture.
