Drivers without a licence will soon be facing jail charges as the Hyderabad traffic police who have moved the drunken drivers to jail are now preparing the ground to send those driving without obtaining licences to prison.

The Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety has directed recently that action against traffic violations should invoke provisions of the MV Act proposing imprisonment. According to the Sections 180 and 181 of the Motor Vehicles Act, the drivers caught without obtaining licences can be jailed for three months.

Deputy commissioner of police (Hyderabad Traffic) AV Ranganath spoke to an English daily that charge-sheets would be filed against drivers caught without licence and the owner for giving the vehicle to the rule violator. The process is likely to start after a month and for those caught without driving licenses, counselling will be held during this time.

Awareness programmes also are being planned to be spread over various platforms that the people who are driving without obtaining a license will be jailed. Those who are not carrying their licences with them can produce them later but only after paying a fine.
