Hyderabad: Justice M S Ramachandra Rao of the High Court at Hyderabad on Wednesday admitted a writ plea challenging the applicability of the provisions of the Legal Metrology Act to set top boxes.

The judge is dealing with a writ plea questioning the decision of an Inspector Metrological Department in seizing the set top boxes belonging to Digital Entertainment Pvt Ltd.

The judge directed the petitioner to deposit the compounding fee and made clear that such deposit would be subject to further orders in the writ petition in which the applicability would be determined.

It is contended by the petitioner that set top boxes were not sold to its users and therefore it would not fall within the packaged commodity as defined under the law.
