40 drug manufacturers licences suspended

Warangal: The licences of 40 drug manufacturers in the State were suspended for violating manufacturing norms, informed Akun Sabharwal, the Director of Drugs Control Administration (DCA).

Telangana happens to be important manufacturing centre of drugs in India as well as world markets hence steps were being taken to ensure sound manufacturing practices. Recently raids were conducted on 55 drug manufacturers to check quality of manufacturing practices.

Sabharwal was on a visit to district on Thursday. Speaking to press persons here, he said steps were being taken to maintain quality of drugs supplied free of cost at government hospitals. A special drive was organised to collect samples of drugs supplied to government hospitals.

160 samples were collected from all districts including interior PHCs to test the quality of government supplies. 18,000 medical shops were inspected recently and 3,000 violations were detected and action was taken. Licences of 642 shops were suspended for selling Schedule H 1drugs without prescription.

There were 29,000 retailers and 475 drug manufacturers were licenced in the State, he informed.

On the functioning of Blood Banks he said raids were conducted on 109 blood banks in the State. 67 blood banks were suspended, four were ordered to stop functioning and licence of one blood bank was cancelled for the violations.

On the day, Director Sabharwal visited Mother Voluntary Blood Bank in Warangal and saw its bad shape. Its licence was cancelled and closed for violating Schedule F part XII B of Drugs and Cosmetics Act 1940. He also visited Indian Red Cross Society Blood Bank.

Interacting with Warangal District Chemists and Druggists Association representatives, he told that efforts were being to bring order in the trade towards dispensing quality drugs to the patients on the prescription of qualified doctors along with a proper bill.

Sabharwal warned the chemists not to sell Schedule H1 drugs without prescription and that surprise checks will be conducted in the coming three months and action would be taken against offenders.
