New Delhi: The National Green Tribunal on Thursday directed Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Odisha, state governments to ensure that there is no sand mining on the riverbeds being carried without prior environment clearance.
A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Swatanter Kumar, which heard the case on Thursday, was furious that the illegal mining was being allowed to flourish with modern machinery that could damage the ecology of these States irrevocably.
It ordered immediate halt to all such illegal activities which did not have any environmental clearances at once. Noticing that the Resident Commissioner of the Maharashtra Sadan at New Delhi was absent during the proceedings despite all other States being represented, the tribunal issues a bailable warrant for his arrest.
It also asked all the four States to respond with action taken reports in two weeks hence. The next hearing is adjourned to February 4.
The green panel's direction came while hearing a plea by NGO Readiness for Empowerment through Legitimate Action (RELA) and Polavaram Mandal ex-president Vara Laxmi seeking directions to Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Odisha and Maharashtra governments to ban illegal sand mining.
The plea, filed through advocate Sravan Kumar, has also sought directions to formulate and place on record strategy/ scheme to prevent illegal mining and a cumulative impact study on rampant sand mining in these states.
