Hyderabad: The MIM, one of the key players in the GHMC elections, has received about 2,000 applications from aspirants for the party ticket to contest in the GHMC elections. The party set Saturday as the last day for receiving applications from the aspirants.

Interestingly, the party asked the aspirants to attach Rs 5,000 demand draft along with each application. The deposit is non-refundable. A huge number of women were seen making beeline to Darul Shifa on Saturday.

Since 50 per cent of seats have been reserved for women, a number of women, besides persons belonging to Scheduled Castes and Backward Classes, also sought the party ticket. Some of them could have found it an opportunity to earn name and money.

“When everyone is earning money, why should I remain behind,” asked a middle aged woman aspirant. Some of the aspirants have expressed the fear that they may not get the chance to contest if the MIM will have tacit understanding with the TRS in certain wards.

For instance, Mohammed Junaid Bogdadi, who had contested from Bholakpur under Musheerabad constituency last time, but lost to Independent candidate Md Wajid Hussain by a margin of 300 votes, has decided to opt to stand from Red Hills ward because of his apprehensions that the MIM may not from Bholakpur ward.

According to party sources, the party chief Asaduddin Owaisi would interview the candidate and only if the party president is convinced of his or her victory, he or she would get the party ticket.
The screening process would start from Sunday.

When asked why they were charging Rs 5,000 per application, a party leader said that they had been following this practice for some time. Even during the MLA elections, the aspirants were asked to deposit some amount with the party, the source said.

The impact on the MIM party because of reservation of wards would be minimal as the party leadership was in constant with the government while the process was on. The MIM, the sources said, decided to field candidates in 75 wards.
