Khammam: The Open Schools, which were established to provide education with a motto to reach out and reach all, particularly to the school dropouts with the principle of freedom to learn, are unable to reach the target in the district.

The State government had launched the Open Schools with great fanfare in the district for those students of tenth class and Intermediate who missed the chance of formal education. Many students in the district had taken admission in these schools hoping to continue with their education. But even after two months, neither classes were conducted nor books given to the students.

This year, nearly 3,000 Intermediate students and 4,000 SSC students had taken admission in the Open Schools at various centres in the district.

Speaking to The Hans India here on Saturday, Students Union leader N Sudhakar said, “The government is collecting Rs 1,500 from Intermediate student and Rs 1,200 from SSC student along with examination fee. The management of some private schools and colleges are collecting extra fee for conducting classes. But till now, the classes are not conducted and books are not distributed to the students.”

Sudhakar wondered as to how any student could prepare for the examinations without attending any classes and without books. How could a student come to know what was there in the syllabus and what to read, he questioned. Stating that several students have failed in the examinations as they couldn’t prepare without books, he doubted the same results may repeat.

Almost all schools and colleges have already completed the syllabus for regular SSC and Intermediate students and conducting revision classes also. But the students in Open Schoolsare in a quandary without knowing what to read and how to prepare for the examinations.

However, the District Coordinator of Open Schools, Murali Krishna, said that classes in every centre at various places in the district were being conducted on a regular basis on every Sunday and they had given orders to the management of the schools and colleges to conduct classes on holidays too to complete the syllabus. Within a week, books would be distributed to the students, he added.

The pass percentage of the students, studying in the Open Schools in Khammam district, is falling down drastically every year and it is not exceeding 15 per cent. In the recently announced results of supplementary examinations, the pass percentage of the students has fallen to 10 percent.

Recently, District Education Officer (DEO) Nampalli Rajesh paid a surprise visit to two schools (Swathi and KLR Techno schools) at Palvancha, to which Open Schools centres are allotted. Surprisingly both schools remained closed.

The DEO warned the managements of schools and colleges which had Open Schoolscentres that stringent action would be taken if they violate the rules by not conducting the classes and if they collect high fees from the students. He had also given strict orders to the managements of the schools and colleges, which had Open Schools centres, to run the classes on every Sunday strictly as per the rules.
