Civil society gears up to make it poll issue
A section of civil society has decided to administer oath to candidates aspiring to contest in the GHMC elections that they will protect the Wakf properties. This, the civil society members say, is necessary because many scamps relating to Wakf properties have surfaced of late.
Hyderabad: A section of civil society has decided to administer oath to candidates aspiring to contest in the GHMC elections that they will protect the Wakf properties. This, the civil society members say, is necessary because many scamps relating to Wakf properties have surfaced of late.
Deccan Wakf Properties Protection Society (DWPPS), Awami Insaaf Movement and Telangana Praja Front have undertaken the task of creating awareness among the masses to ensure that “right” candidates are elected. As part of the campaign, they have planned to distribute one lakh handbills in all divisions, particularly near mosques and the places where Wakf properties exist.
“The candidate must declare that neither he or she nor any of his family members grab any Wakf land. The contestant shall ensure to the best of his ability to protect Wakf lands from illegal occupation or encroachment. They should also ensure that the lands already encroached or are under illegal occupation are freed from the clutches of grabbers. “We will endorse candidates who take pledge to protect Wakf properties,” said Osman Alhajri, of DWPPS.
The total extent of Wakf land in Greater Hyderabad is estimated at 7,000 acres and between 70 and 80 per cent of it is under illegal occupation. For instance, land measuring a little over 27 acres, belonging to Toli Masjid, was allegedly grabbed in nexus with the support of local politicians. A hug function hall is being built on the land. In Miyapur, not less than 30 acres of Wakf land has been grabbed. So is the case with land at Kondapur where 90 acres is under illegal occupation.
