Kurnool: Thanks to the land allotted to him by the officials, a Girijan farmer, Muganna of Sunnipenta near Srisailam, has not only become a model ryot, but is showing the way for the entire farming community in the State itself how to turn nine acres of waste land into productive farm land, in the process utilising the MGNREGA scheme fruitfully.

The class VIII pass, Muganna, with two wives Veeramma and Gurramma, had been allotted nine acres which was unfit for cultivation. It was full of stones, hills and bushy areas, more or less resembling a mini-forest. Having decided to eke out a living, he and other family members took upon themselves the difficult task of turning the land into a productive one, getting rid of stones/hills and bushes.

He started tilling the land utilising modern farm tools, including a hired tractor after taking a loan. Banks were not of much help for him, as his land was the ‘banjar’ variety. In a phenomenal turn around, Muganna managed to raise maize in eight acres and red gram in one acre.

During nights, the family used to struggle to keep wild animals at bay, utilising his ample experience of having lived in deep woods. He also secured wise counsel from the Agriculture department officials to prevent pest damage. Having tasted success in his endeavour and achieved stability in production, Muganna is busy raising a mango plantation, using the financial assistance provided by the government.
