New Delhi: A high-level meeting of the Union Agriculture Ministry officials on Thursday will decide on the quantum to drought relief to Telangana State. The State had earlier sought a drought relief of Rs.2,500 crore after initial estimates.

But, a team deputed by the Centre a couple of weeks later of the initial assessment, felt that the drought was severe than estimated earlier and reportedly pegged the loss at Rs 3,000 crore. The State Government reportedly expects at least Rs 1,500 crore relief from the Centre if not more.

However, sources in the Agriculture Department are skeptical about the same. TS Minister for Irrigation, T Harish Rao, here on Wednesday met the Union Minister for Agriculture, Dr Radha Mohan Singh, in this regard and pressed for earlier release of the drought relief fund.

He later met Union Food and Civil Supplies Minister, Ram Vilas Paswan,to seek earlier release of Rs 212 crore dues pending against handling charges of maize to the State. It is learnt that the earlier representation has been misplaced and the Union Minister directed the officials to trace the same.

Before leaving for Hyderabad, he met Union Water Resources Minister,Uma Bharati, to invite her for the inauguration of second phase of Mission Kakatiya in the State meant to rejuvenate water storage tanks and increase ground level water for irrigation purpose. Resident Commissioner of Telangana Bhavan, Shashank Goel accompanied Harish Rao.
