Hyderabad: The notification for opening new private degree colleges is not likely anytime soon as the government intends to checkmate errant colleges across the State. The government intends to release the notification only after strengthening the existing degree colleges.

Presently there are over 1,200 private degree colleges in the State. The government feels that the number of colleges is more than the requisite number. Further the government was of the view that these colleges have mushroomed due to the fee reimbursement.

In recently held inspections, it was found that several private colleges do not have requisite infrastructure, facilities, and faculty. In order to improve the standards in the degree colleges, the Telangana State Council of Higher Education (TSCHE) has convened a meeting with registrars of all universities on Monday.

While the government had directed the universities and private degree colleges to install biometric and CCTV cameras, nothing fruitful had happened till date. The TSCHE would raise the issue of non-compliance to the government’s direction during the meeting with the registrars.

“Biometric system and Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) will be taken up in the colleges in a big way. Soon all the colleges will be again directed to install the facilities and upon failing to do so, a stern action will be initiated against them,” said an official of TSCHE.

On the Common Universities Act, the TSCHE officials said a committee would be formed which would study technical, professional and conventional universities acts in various states. “The committee which will be formed soon will tour states like Gujarat, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and among other states to study their universities Act. The draft will be done before the commencement of next Assembly session,” an official of TSCHE said.
