Hyderabad: Like cement, another important material used for construction, sand, will also be made available in sacks weighing 50kg and 100 kg in Telangana soon. After bringing transparency in sand mining and sales through an integrated ‘sand policy’ enforced last year, the Telangana government moved further to supply the granular substance in bags to users at their doorstep from February this year.

Under the new scheme, the Telangana State Mineral Development Corporation (TSMDC), the official agency for sand excavation, regulation and supply, will be providing home delivery facility to the users who order sand online from the official website of the corporation. At present, sand has been supplied to the users who ordered online only from nearby sand reaches.

The officials said the plans have been finalised to supply sand through bags for construction purpose first in Hyderabad and then extend to other districts in a phased manner, depending on the response from the users.

A big sand stockyard is already under construction for the purpose at the Ramoji Film city. The TSMDC officials, however, said the price for sand for each kg and transportation charges levied on door delivery are yet to be finalised. Talks are in progress with some private transport agencies for the new initiative. State Irrigation and Mining minister T Harish Rao called for a meeting with the corporation officials to discuss these issues next week.

Huge quantity of sand has been identified in Warangal with 1.39 crore cubic metres followed by Karimnagar (1.17 crore cubic metres), Khammam (31 lakh), Nizamabad (16 lakh), Nalgonda, (14 lakh), Mahbubnagar (6 lakh), Adilabad (5.87 lakh) and Ranga Reddy (35,000) cubic metres of sand reserves. Medak and Hyderabad have zero sand reserves.

Depending on the requirement of sand at domestic level, the officials said stocks will be made available in the main areas ensuring timely delivery. The new system will not only reduce the growing influence of sand mafia in the urban areas blooming with construction activity but also relieve hurdles in the sand transportation to the destinations.
