Hyderabad: Tension prevailed in the University of Hyderabad (UoH) here on Monday following suicide of Vemula Rohith Chakravarti who was one of the five Dalit research scholars expelled from the hostel. The trouble began early in the morning when the police personnel tried to shift Rohith’s body from NRS hostel to the Osmania General Hospital for autopsy.

This attempt by the police was staunchly resisted by large number of students who gathered at the hostel. The students had locked the body in the hostel room, where Rohith hanged himself on Sunday evening.

Agitated by the police presence at the hostel, the students demanded the police that they go back. They said unless justice was done to Rohith’s family the body cannot be shifted. During this time, a scuffle broke between the police and students which resulted in mild lathi charge and eight students were detained. However, they were released later.

Rohith’s mother Vemula Radhika along with her family members who came to the university demanded the Central government that Vice-Chancellor Prof P Appa Rao should be immediately terminated from service as he was responsible for her son’s suicide. “I never expected my son to take this extreme step. Those responsible for my son’s suicide should be arrested,” she demanded.

Demanding termination of V-C services, Radhika refused to give consent for autopsy to their son’s body. However, she budged later and agreed to conduct autopsy. Following the suicide, the university has turned into a fortress with presence of large number of Rapid Action Force, Telangana State Special Protection Force and local police.

The university echoed with slogans against the V-C and Union Minister Bandaru Dattatreya. They demanded university administration revoking unconditional suspension on four other research scholars. “It’s not suicide but murder.

SC, ST Atrocities case should be registered against those who were responsible for the murder. Further, Rs 50 lakh compensation should be given to Rohith’s family and a job,” said Arpita, a student. Students decided not to allow administration to work till the justice is done to Rohith’s family.
