Twin medical towers to dot Hyd skyline

Hyderabad: To give a tough competition to the private corporate hospitals, the Telangana State government unveiled big plans to strengthen public health sector and health care facilities.Construction of “Health Towers,” establishment of health hubs in the districts and the upgrading of medical educational institutions are the initiatives being taken as part of the development of medical infrastructure by the government this year.
‘Twin towers’ with 10 floors each will come up on Osmania General Hospital premises to increase the bed capacity from the present 1,000 to 2,000. The towers will be equipped with advanced medical laboratories as well a nursing college. However, the 150 year old heritage structure in the hospital premises will be untouched as the heritage activists opposed the demolition of the building.
The officials of State Medical and Health Department said the designs for the twin towers would be finalised by Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, who already accorded permission for the construction of towers. The TSMSIDC ( Telangana State Medical Services and Infrastructure Corporation ) would be the official agency to implement the project costing nearly Rs 300 to Rs 400 crore.
To make NIMS ( Nizam Institute of Medical Sciences), a one- stop centre for the treatment of all chronic ailments, the officials said “Cardiac Tower’ and Kidney ( Nephrology) tower,” having five floors each, will come up on the institution premises.
Opening of special Maternity ward with advanced neonatal care facilities, new Out Patient ward and separate building for attendants of inpatients are included in the modernisation of the NIMS.The improved medical facilities are intended to help patients avoid the burden of paying huge medical bills in corporate hospitals. A face-lift will be given to the Gandhi hospital by installing new intensive care unit. To meet the demand, the number of beds in the intensive wards will be increased.
To contain flooding patients to the hospitals in Hyderabad, specialised wings will be established in Mahatma Gandhi Medical ( MGM) college in Warangal by acquiring land from the abutting jail premises. Upgrading of district hospitals in Nizamabd and Adilabad is also on the cards. Emergency and intensive medical care facilities will be provided in the two districts.
