Warangal: Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) national secretary R Sudha Bhaskar has called upon men and women of the proletariat society to stand united and fight for their rights.

He stressed on the need to take up serious struggles against the economic liberalisation policies of the Central government. “We should draw inspiration from the general strike staged by workers and farmers on Jan 19, 1982 in support of their demands,” he noted.

Bhaskar was addressing a gathering at ‘Workers and Farmers Unity Day’ organised by the CITU, Telangana Rythu Sangham and different organisations of agriculture labourers marking the day at CPI (M) district headquarters in Hanamkonda on Tuesday.

He expressed serious concern over the continuation of farmer suicides in Telangana State where nearly 1,800 farmers ended their lives during the past 18 months. About 80 percent of the deceased farmers were tenant farmers. The State government was not extending its support to tenant farmers, he alleged.

Referring to free distribution of three-acre land to landless Dalits, he said the programme was not being implemented properly. Because of the dilution of Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme by the Centre about 15 lakh workers in Telangana migrated to other States seeking livelihood, he said.

Similarly, the State government’s promise to regularise the services of contract workers was yet to be delivered. Minimum wages were not being offered in majority of the industries and State and Central governments were resorting to anti-labour policies, alleged Bhaskar while pointing out that foreign direct investment (FDI) in various sectors was aimed at protecting interests of capitalist forces.

Big corporate houses were being given huge tax exemptions at the cost of common public, workers and employees, he stated. District secretaries of CITU and Rythu Sangham M Chukkaiah and Ch Rangaiah, CITU city general secretary R Ramesh, leaders U Nageshwara Rao, Md Mahabub Pasha, K Lingaiah, Jannu Prakash and others were present.
