The relay hunger strike by Gopala Mitra workers of District Livestock Development Agency (DLDA) has reached 19th day on Tuesday. The agitating workers have been demanding better salary and 50 per cent quota in regular posts of veterinary assistants and office subordinates in the district. 

Mahbubnagar: The relay hunger strike by Gopala Mitra workers of District Livestock Development Agency (DLDA) has reached 19th day on Tuesday. The agitating workers have been demanding better salary and 50 per cent quota in regular posts of veterinary assistants and office subordinates in the district.

At present, there are 250 Gopala Mitra workers appointed by the DLDA for extending veterinary services in the villages. They have been working for meager salaries of Rs 2,500 to Rs 3,500 that too paid on the basis of their targets. The main work of Gopala Mitra is to visit villages and provide health services to cattle. They play a major role in artificial insemination of the cattle.

“There are more than 1,300 vacant posts in the Veterinary Department. But till now the government has not filled the posts and running the show by utilising the services of Gopala Mitras. We are working for meager salaries for the past 15 years.

Our demand now is to regularise our services and upgrade all Gopala Mitra workers to VA and OS and hike our salaries at least to Rs 16,000 per month,” said Ramulu, president of Telangana Gopala Mitra Sangam.The Gopala Mitra workers have been on relay hunger strike January 1, but no officer, Minister or leader has responded to their demands.

“We have submitted representations to the District Collector, and also gave representations to the Ministers. Everyone has given their assent orally but they haven’t given us in written. We are demanding that the government immediately resolve our issues,” said Ramulu.
