Adilabad: The 600-MW power generation under Stage-II of the Kakatiya Thermal Power Plant (KTPP) at Chelpur in Warangal district is already underway early this month and the 2X600-MW Singareni Thermal Power Plant (STPP) at Jaipur in Adilabad is on the verge of commissioning commercial operations very soon.

The ensuing summer would be a bit cool for the Telangana State government which has been battling hard to mitigate the problem of power generation in the region post bifurcation.

The works relating to the Rs 7,573-crore project that commenced way back in 2011 are in the last lap finally, with the authorities gearing for the synchronisation of 600-MW by February-end and another 600-MW by March-end. Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao is expected to take part in the commissioning of the project.

The coal-fired thermal project, financed by Power Finance Corporation (PFC), was mooted in 2010 as part of Singareni Company Collieries Limited (SCCL)’s business diversification strategy.

The SCCL was able to get the required forest and environmental clearances besides authorisation from the Airports Authority of India for the construction of 275-meter chimney.

Though the plant works were progressing at a snail’s pace initially, the works started picking up speed ever since the State was bifurcated.

The one TMC ft-capacity reservoir works are almost completed along with the laying of pipeline from Setpally to draw water from Godavari.

Meanwhile, the pipeline works are in progress to lift another 2 TMC feet of water from Pranahita River.

With further delay in the works relating to the construction of railway line, the expansion and strengthening works of the existing road en route to power plant for the transportation of coal.

It may be mentioned here that in addition to STPP’s 2X600-MW power units, the Chief Minister also laid the foundation stone for the Rs 3,570-crore 1X600-MW power unit in March 2015.

The new unit consultancy was given to NTPC and the project is expected to be completed within 34 months.

While the works of Boiler, Turbine and Generator (BTG), and Balance of Point (BoP) were assigned to BHEL, the NTPC was appointed as the technical consultant of the plant.

“Efforts are on to start the power generation in the first unit from March and the second one is slated for April,” N. Sridhar, the Chairman and Managing Director of the SCCL, said, stating that directions were given to the officials to work in three shifts until the project was completed.

“Almost all the works are in the final stage,” J Nagaiah, SCCL General Manager (CDN) and Chief Public Relations Officer, told The Hans India, stating that the synchronisation process of first and second units will take place in March and April respectively.
